IBAN Checker FAQs

Question 1

Which countries does this IBAN checker support?

Accepted Answer

Our IBAN checker currently supports European Union countries, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Turkey. An IBAN from outside these countries is not currently supported; this does not necessarily mean it is invalid.

Question 2

What does the IBAN checker validate?

Accepted Answer

The checker verifies the IBAN’s length and country-specific format, checks its checksum using the MOD-97 calculation, and attempts to verify the bank code against our bank reference data. For UK IBANs, it also performs a modulus check on the sort code and account number combination.

Question 3

Does a successful check confirm that the account exists?

Accepted Answer

No. A successful check means the IBAN passes the validation checks performed by this tool. It does not confirm that the account exists, is open, belongs to a particular person or can receive a payment. When you make a transfer in the Persia Money app, we also perform Confirmation of Payee (CoP) checks to check the recipient’s name against the account details, help prevent fraud and meet local regulatory requirements. These are separate from this public IBAN checker. Always confirm the recipient’s details before sending money.

Question 4

What additional checks are performed on UK IBANs?

Accepted Answer

For UK IBANs, we check the sort code and account number combination using modulus checking, in addition to the IBAN format, length, checksum and bank-code checks. This helps detect certain errors in UK account details, but it does not verify account ownership or confirm that the account is active.

Question 5

Can the checker identify the bank from an IBAN?

Accepted Answer

The tool attempts to identify the bank using the bank code within the IBAN. Where a match is available, it displays the institution’s name and its logo, if available. A missing logo does not mean the IBAN is invalid, and identifying a bank does not confirm the individual account exists.

Question 6

Why might my IBAN fail validation?

Accepted Answer

An IBAN may fail because its length or format is incorrect, its checksum does not match, or its bank code cannot be verified against our reference data. UK IBANs may also fail the sort code and account number modulus check. Check the details against the recipient’s bank-issued information rather than changing digits yourself.

Question 7

Is my IBAN saved when I use this tool?

Accepted Answer

No. Validation takes place on our server, but the IBAN and other details submitted for the check are not saved. The tool checks bank details only; it does not initiate a transfer.
